From side project to first 100 customers
The unglamorous playbook: one use case, one audience, pricing from day one, and the discipline to ship the boring parts.

Founder · Lumen
Lumen started as a weekend script that answered questions over a single PDF. Getting to the first 100 paying customers had nothing to do with the script and everything to do with refusing to build the wrong things.
Narrow, then narrower
The first version did one thing: index a Drive folder and answer with page citations, for support teams only. Every feature request that didn't serve that persona was logged and declined. That discipline is the only reason shipping cadence stayed weekly.
Charge from day one
We put a price on it before it felt ready. Free pilots generated opinions; the first $29/month generated requirements. Within six weeks, paying customers told us more about the roadmap than three months of free beta feedback.
- Ship the boring parts: billing, error states, empty states.
- Talk to every churned customer within 48 hours.
- Write the docs you wish you had — they become your best sales pages.
